Double Take is a series of publications with a focus on creative writings and other means of conveying ideas, highlighting particular subjects through various interpretations. Its first issue, On Vices, is an observation of vices as inseparable facets of ourselves—expressed in different mediums, filtered through personal experiences.

There’s a thin line between indulging in a vice because you feel you ‘have to’ instead of you ‘want to’, which I feel makes all the difference. In making a conscious decision to indulge in a vice, there’s a certain type of satisfaction to be had. Of course there are facets to this subject such as social acceptance, norms, legality, or just plain shame, but the truth is that everyone is entitled to their own vices. So long as you know you’re in control and you’re not harming anybody else, there’s kind of no stopping you. Whether it’s smoking, drinking, hook-ups, excessive shopping, or procrastinating, allowing yourself moments of these is actually just a mundane part of life.

There are countless reasons why we indulge in our personal vices. Perhaps it’s a thing you used to do with your old friends. Perhaps you’re more comfortable engaging in social situations by doing it. Perhaps you just simply enjoy it. Our vices are just as much a part of us as our best habits and qualities, so why deny it? Cut yourself some slack.

What can’t you let go of?
