In our second issue, we pick up where we left off in our debut issue while also providing a unique contrast to it of sorts—similar to recreating a favorite dish but with slightly different ingredients or seasonings this time.

While the cover of the first issue features an illustration of something that grows from the earth, Louie Lee Wei Yi’s print for this issue’s cover came from the sea. We were joined by food-loving artist in the last issue’s ‘Sharing Table’, and this time we have restaurateur and art collector. The second issue also features two follow-up pieces from the contributors’ respective explorations into alternative carbohydrate sources and Sundanese cuisine both continuing in the second parts of ‘It’s Not Rice but Better’ and ‘What Shapes a Food Culture? A Case Study of Sundanese Cuisine’.

The journey continues to cover the significance of recipes, demonstrating how they serve as a means for fostering social cohesion and resilience among people. ‘Utilising Arak Bali as a Political Weapon’ offers a critical outlook on the Bali Provincial Government’s efforts in co-opting arak Bali’s sociocultural importance for political gain. By amplifying diverse perspectives regarding our relationship with food, Serving Suggestion Issue #02 aims to delve deeper into how personal/individual, historical, and socio-cultural aspects shape the gastronomic landscape, extending beyond Indonesia to encompass various interconnected contexts.
