Primarily using Risograph printing, this project initiated by graphic designer Daisuke Kano produces and circulates small-run publications. It explores logistics, paraphrase, oblique approaches, and localisation through graphic design, and this book serves as the founding manifesto. The name ‘Meian’ signifies the interplay of light and shadow; the photograph of the candle on the cover is reproduced in greyscale ink. While employing movable type modules that generate variation through recombination, each number pictured in the book embodies an “alternate” state, suggesting an editable accumulation of multiple times. ‘Meian’ is a sub-label of the magazine ‘Neutral Colors’.
MeianはNeutral Colors のサブレーベルであり、グラフィックデザイナー加納大輔によって開始された出版プロジェクト。グラフィックデザインを通じてパラフレーズ、ロジスティクス、オブリーク、ローカライズの探求を目的にしている。主にリソグラフを中心に、Neutral Colors が所有する機材を用いて、小部数の出版物を世界中に流布することを試みる。本書はMeian の設立趣意書であり、出版プロジェクトの誕生を祝うために刊行された。「明暗」は光から影の陰影を意味する言葉であり、ろうそくの写真はインクのグレースケールによって描写されている。組み合わせによってバリエーションを生み出す可動活字のモジュールを採用しつつも、それぞれの数字が抱えもつ燃え尽きるまでの「オルタネート」は、複数の時間を編集可能な「本」という性質のひとつを表現している。
