This catalogue was published in conjunction with the exhibition of Issei Suda’s masterpiece series Fushikaden at Jiazazhi Library in Ningbo, China.
Suda began working on Fushikaden in the early 1970s before it was finally published as a photobook in 1978. The series, whose name derives from a 15th century Noh play, is an assemblage of portraits and situations from daily life, taken during Suda’s travels throughout Japan. It is one of Issei Suda’s numerous masterpieces, praised for his ability to capture the anomalies of modern human existence from an inimitable, almost surreal perspective. In the years since its release, the series has lost neither appeal nor popularity.
Fushikaden comprises 71 photographs from the series.
