About RUGA
In 2019, I began making single-edition, non-binary garments as an extension of my art practice as a way to think through my fraught and volatile experience of gender.
In 2020, in the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, I moved from my home in Goa back to the United States where I had previously lived to pursue my MFA in Interdisciplinary art at Parsons School of Design in New York City. After moving, my garments grew into the company RUGA - enabling me to broaden public access through expanded production and to offer a range of sizes.
The garments are made at MasterG in New Delhi, an all-women training program and manufacturing unit with safe and respectful working conditions which equips women with skills to secure jobs and to begin their own enterprises.
As per the availability of materials, the garments are made in small batches. I source fabric from various organisations across India that work on developing and reviving Indigenous Indian cotton, handloom techniques and natural dying. The garments are also made from repurposed and reclaimed fabric as well as deadstock sourced from organisations such as Fabscrap in Brooklyn.
Thank you!
Warmly,
Rujuta Rao
