Flyby Anomalies: Gravity and Distinctiveness documents a 2025 symposium organized by Yayoi Shionoiri, Satoko Miyakoshi, and Emiko Inoue exploring the intersections of feminism, queerness, art, and activism across Japan, the United States, Indigenous perspectives, and beyond. Bringing together artists, scholars, and organizers, this newly published English-language edition (2026) considers how artistic practices can challenge inherited narratives, create new forms of solidarity, and imagine alternative futures.
Through conversations with artists including Ginga Kondo, Mai Endo, Sharon Hayes, Skawennati, Yoshiko Shimada, and Yui Usui, alongside essays by Marina Lisa Komiya, Nodoka Odawara, and Yuki Iiyama, the zine traces diverse approaches to resistance, embodiment, memory, technology, and collective action. Moving between archives and speculative futures, physical bodies and digital avatars, personal experience and social movements, Flyby Anomalies asks how art can generate new possibilities. The publication embraces “hyphenated identities” and hybrid communities as sites of connection, where difference becomes a source of creative potential.
Part document, part conversation, and part call to action, this zine preserves a moment of collective thinking—an invitation to continue questioning, creating, and building networks across cultures, disciplines, and languages.
