Archival Replica of Rupert’s Ring, the Crown Jewel of the Sovereign Elector of Rupert’s Land and the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC).

Replica of Rupert’s Ring bearing ‘The First Maple’, the Crown Jewel of the Sovereign Elector of Rupert’s Land and the Hudson’s Bay Company (HSBC). Rupert’s Ring was assembled by its namesake Prince Rupert of the Rhine after his journey to Canada and subsequent consolidation of Rupert’s Land. The ring, a patrimonial jewel of the Palatinate, was mounted with an ancient piece of carved ivory depicting a maple leaf. The relic of the North was secured a century earlier on Baffin Island by Martin Frobisher during his war against the Inuit. Lost after the Battle of the Bay and the absorption of Rupert’s Land into Canada proper in 1870, the HSBC Crown Jewel was recovered in 1982 and toured Canada as a supplement to the ceremony of Partition initiated by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Following the celebration surrounding repatriation of the constitution, the ring was disassembled, the jeweled band sent to the Royal Ontario Museum, while the leaf was given a central position in the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Quebec. Determined by carbon dating to be between 3,900 and 3,600 years old, ‘The First Maple’ is the earliest depiction of a maple leaf on the continent, an ur-object of Canadian aesthetic culture. LMX Unlimited has reunited the two elements, reforming the original mounted ring using precise 3D Scanning. This replica is made to scale in sterling silver, allowing for a precise recreation of the Crown Jewel of Rupert’s Land.
