Wu Wei was raised by her grandparents. After they passed away one after another, she traveled to the town and the old house where her grandparents lived and worked to listen to the stories of their youth. Several times she returned to the home where her grandparents had lived together for seventeen years, immersing herself in stale time and space, opening sealed left behinds, organizing their lives, and fitting photographs she had once taken of her grandmother into the rooms of the present. Wu Wei also traveled to the sites of their shared trips and stood in the same place to photograph the sites, imposing the existing space, her present-day self, and souvenir photos of their past trips to create a fictionalized version of their true feelings. A Life of Fen and Fang encompasses Wu Wei's eponymous photographic series, as well as textual creations such as essays and poems.
