"I would prefer not to."originates from the short story Bartleby, the Scrivener (1853) by American author Herman Melville. Narrated by a lawyer, the story tells of his employee Bartleby, a scrivener (copyist) who initially works diligently. However, when asked to perform additional tasks, Bartleby responds calmly but firmly: "I would prefer not to." This brief sentence subsequently becomes the turning point in his attitude towards work and life. He gradually reduces his involvement in tasks, choosing to distance himself from the world around him in a distinctive way.
